Jesy Garcia, 49, of Newark, had been taken to University Hospital after the collision where she was pronounced dead hours after, according to police. A bystander described the aftermath as a “nightmare”, to NBC4.
One of the drivers has reportedly died. One person was listed in critical condition, while another was in serious condition.
Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly said the investigation is a complicated process involving interviewing witnesses and passengers in addition to reviewing video.
“We have some preliminarily kind of data that says we suspect one of the bus drivers may have gone through a red light”. “We are not positive about that, but that is what is being said”.
The driver of the No. 59 bus was killed in the crash and several passengers were hurt, NJ Transit said.
The accident happened at Raymond Blvd. and Broad St. Traffic in the area was being diverted, and Baraka urged commuters to stay away from the intersection as officials worked to clear the street.
New Jersey Transit said both drivers were in good standing.
Baraka said Barthelus had left the Ironbound section of Newark to begin his regular run on the 59 Line. “She came back and got me and we ran down with ice, water and med kit for the EMS workers to see if we could help”.
Petrain says she saw people with head and leg injuries.
