Tesla said Tuesday it has added a 100 kilowatt-hour battery to its stable of power options for the Model S and Model X electric cars.
Tesla will begin selling the quickest-accelerating vehicle in production, the Model S P100D, CEO Elon Musk said in a conference call.
Tesla Motors has updated its four-door, all-electric saloon, the Model S. It now gets a 100 kWh battery pack in the top-end P100 D trim that has pumped up its range, speed, and acceleration figures.
Tesla’s cars are now among the fastest on Earth. However, Tesla says its new P100D, which also hits 100mph in 2.9 seconds is now the quiclest production vehicle in the world.
The 100kWh battery pack will also propel the heavy Model X crossover SUV to 60 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds.
In the United States customers who have purchased, but haven’t received, their Model S or Model X P90D model with Ludicrous Mode, can have their cars upgraded to the new P100D Ludicrous Mode specification for US$10,000 ($13,000). “Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development”, Tesla said.
The Model S P100D with the company’s Ludicrous mode will have a 315-mile range.
The Model X crossover, Tesla said, already the quickest SUV in the world, will be even faster with the battery upgrade – from 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Tesla says the Model X P100D is the world’s fastest SUV.

Tesla is charging $134,500 for the fastest vehicle ever. For those that have a P90D Ludicrous vehicle on order but haven’t yet taken delivery, the price is cut in half to $10,000.
