US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte charged in Rio over false robbery report

Lochte initially said he and three swimming teammates were robbed after their taxi was pulled over by armed men posing as police. The police also released a CCTV footage of what transpired at the gas station.

Brazilian police alleged that the USA swimmers vandalized a gas station restroom.

He’s on the hook for filing a false police report, and if he’s convicted with the crime he could actually go to prison, TMZ reports.

“We all make mistakes, but they’re rarely given front page scrutiny”, Pine Bros CEO Rider McDowell said in a statement on Thursday.

When he refused, one of the men placed the pistol against the swimmer’s head, and he then handed over his wallet, Lochte had said.

According to CNN, Lochte’s lawyer, Jeffrey Ostrow, had not heard from Brazilian authorities yet.

On Thursday Lochte did pick up one new sponsor account in Pine Bros.

That doesn’t sound like a bad deal, since he might just need a cough drop to clear his throat if he testifies. If Lochte doesn’t return to face the charge, he could be tried in absentia.

However, as Conger and Bentz tried to leave the country three days later, Rio officials removed them from a US -bound airplane and questioned them about the robbery claim. Feigen donated roughly $11,000 to a Brazilian charity to avoid prosecution.

It dominated news coverage of South America’s first Olympics, amid heightened concerns over security in the crime-ridden metropolis. Details of the charge might also be sent to the International Olympic Committee, which has formed an ethics committee to investigate the gas station incident. Blackmun did not offer specifics but expressed frustration at their behavior. ‘Let’s give these kids a break, ‘ said Rio 2016 chief spokesman Mario Andrada, who had earlier given a full apology for the supposed ordeal they had gone through in a gunpoint robbery.
