EpiPen auto-injection epinephrine pens manufactured by Mylan NV pharmaceutical company for use by severe allergy sufferers are seen in Washington, U.S. August 24, 2016. Those who pay full price will get $300 off.
Mylan has come under fire for raising the price of EpiPens by more than 400 percent over the last seven years.
Pharmaceutical giant Mylan found itself obligated on Thursday to announce an expansion of its discount programs for low-income people with no – or little – health insurance covering prescription drugs, after the avalanche of criticism the firm had received in recent days. The average cost was more than six times that in May, according to the Elsevier Clinical Solutions’ Gold Standard Drug Database. In fact, the actress, who was actually a spokesperson for Mylan, posted to Instagram on August 25 that she has made a decision to end her relationship with the company, which many fans believe to be a smart move.
In the interest of price transparency, the company says they are also providing the entire economic story of the EpiPen supply chain on their website. This renders a pack of two EpiPens to be around $600 at full price. “The price is what Medicare, Medicaid and insurance companies pay”. But she added that “price is only one part of the problem”, and urged those concerned to help the company work together with policymakers and health-care companies to solve problems of this nature.
It said nothing in its statement to suggest it would be lowering the overall cost of the EpiPen.
“It was never intended that a consumer, the patients would be paying list price. never”. She joined a large number of parents, educators, doctors, and general health and safety advocates who have been calling out Mylan for their actions, and it looks as if they may have had something of an impact.
In a Thursday press release, Mylan said that it would now “cover up to $300 of out-of-pocket cost at pharmacy; reducing patient cost by 50% off Mylan list price”.
Members of the Senate Special Committee on Aging Wednesday called on Mylan to brief Congress about the price increase of the medication. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said in a statement. Richard Blumenthal, (D) CT. It doubled the limit for eligibility for its patient assistance program, so a family of four making up to $97,200 would pay nothing out of pocket.
