The Tesla Model S P100D, as the name suggests, has a 100kWh battery, the largest in any Model S, giving it a range of about 315 miles, or 613 kilometres. “Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development”, the company wrote in a statement. “I think that is really going to send a great message to the public that sustainable transport is the future”, he said, according to Slate.

However, after the announcement, shares of both Tesla and SolarCity gave up earlier gains of 2.49 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively.

“I think what they have done here with the battery pack in terms of improving the capacity in the same form factor is an impressive feat from an engineering standpoint”, said Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch on CNBC’s “Closing Bell “. According to the people over at Tesla, the fastest production vehicle in the world is the Model S P100D, which could soar from 0 miles to a whopping 60 in a mere two and a half seconds, defeating previous records held by models from other auto manufacturing companies. Or $156,400 with the Ludicrous mode upgrade.

Tesla is gearing up to launch the Model 3 with the goal of making electric vehicles attainable to the masses, something that the P100D models certainly aren’t doing.
