Auburn Police Captain Lorenza Dorsey told AL.com the firearm Roberts had was a handgun and he did not have a permit.

The Opelika native was later released from the Lee County Detention Center on bond. Each charge is a Class A misdemeanor, and carries a penalty of no more than one year in jail and a fin up to $6,000. “He is gathering all the facts and will handle the situation appropriately”.

Roberts was a projected starter for Auburn.

This is the fifth offseason arrest for Auburn with defensive back Stephen Roberts, defensive back Jeremiah Dinson, wide receiver Ryan Davis, defensive back Carlton Davis, and defensive end Bryon Cowart.

The timing of Roberts arrest is not good for the Tigers, as he was among those competing for a starting spot at safety and Auburn must face Deshaun Watson and Clemson in the opening game. He also had three tackles and had a forced fumble in 12 games as a true freshman in 2014. Malzahn disciplined the four internally and said they will not miss game action.
