Antoine Griezmann was Europe’s best player last season despite losing out on UEFA’s award to Cristiano Ronaldo, Diego Simeone has said.

“We’ve very happy because Real Madrid has had two players on the shortlist for the best player in Europe”.

After winning the Champions League trophy with Real Madrid and the Euro with Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo was the favourite one to win the trophy. “It wouldnt be fair if I didnt mention these two incredible players – Bale and Griezmann, ” Ronaldo added. [UEFA Best Player] is a very important trophy, and after winning the two most important competitions at club and worldwide level, to win this individual trophy caps off a remarkable year.

But Ronaldo, whose Portugal defeated Griezmann’s France in the Euro 2016 final, said the 25-year-old would’ve been a deserved victor and is certain he will claim the award at some point in his career.

Ronaldo collected 40 of the 55 votes from journalists across each Uefa association, with Greizmann surprisingly in second with eight. And Ronaldo believes the 25-year-old is more deserving of the award he pipped him to at Monaco.

“I’m at the best club in the world and I want to retire here, at 41”, the three-time Ballon d’Or victor said. What I want is to be competitive for another year. Obviously he’ll have a normal process to get to his best, as any player with his pre-season would.

The title for the last season, i.e., 2014/15 went to Lionel Messi.
