Raymond Boulevard and Broad Street remain closed as of 8:15 a.m. and traffic is being detoured onto University Avenue.
The T-bone collision apparently happened after one bus crashed into the side of another, knocking it onto its other side.
About 20 passengers were aboard the bus that was T-boned, and all but one were injured – seven seriously.
You’re on the go! He was killed as was a;passenger on the other bus, which was loaded with commuters. It was not immediately clear what caused the accident. She says they were the first people on the scene.
Newark Police, New Jersey Transit Police, and the Newark Fire department were still on the scene three hours after the crash.
“I tried to help a lady, but she said she was stuck”, victim Marquell Williamson said. Her name was released Saturday.
Nineteen passengers were wounded and seven of them have been transported to nearby hospitals in serious condition. He had worked for NJ Transit for 27 years, the agency said. The surviving driver, a longtime employee of NJ Transit, suffered neck, shoulder and back injuries, officials said.
She said she heard a crash “like an explosion” and ran outside.
A witness of the bus crash said there were “bodies laying everywhere”. The bus that was struck was on its side, its frame bent and the other bus lodged in its undercarriage.
The Essex County prosecutor is investigating the crash. One of the buses is on its side.
Emergency responders removed the passengers from the wreckage one by one, strapping some onto gurneys before transporting them to several local hospitals.
NJ Transit buses have outward and inward facing cameras that come on during a crash or hard braking or a sudden turn to record incidents.
