An irregular heartbeat, otherwise known as Arrhythmia, is a condition in which the heart loses it’s regular rhythm.

The Seattle Sounders, Dempsey’s club team, announced Friday he would miss a Saturday game against rival Portland to be examined.

The Sounders did not release any additional information. There is not specific timeline for Dempsey’s return to the side, but Seattle fans will hope it is sooner rather than later.

This brings into questions his availability for the upcoming CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers next week.

A U.S. Soccer spokesperson also told ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle that Dempsey won’t be called up by Jurgen Klinsmann for World Cup qualifiers against St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Sept. 2) and Trinidad and Tobago (Sept. 6). They need results from those matches to finish in the top two of their group in the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying and advance to the final round as they try to book their spot for Russian Federation 2018. He scored five goals over the past four games, including a hat trick on the road at Orlando City FC and two goals in a 3-1 victory over Portland last Sunday. He did not travel with the squad down to Houston for the team’s 1-1 draw with the Dynamo, what was thought to just be a rest day for the designated player.

Unbeaten in its last five matches, Sunday’s contest is a big one for the Sounders.
