Poor 1st inning dooms Boston’s Wright in 6-3 loss to Royals

Boston Red Sox catcher Sandy Leon puts his arm around starting pitcher Steven Wright (35) as shortstop Xander Bogaerts approaches for a mound conference in the first inning of a baseball game against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park, Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, in Boston.

Wright (13-5, 3.01), who is 5-0 since his last loss two months ago, was used as a pinch runner against the Dodgers in Los Angeles and suffered a right shoulder injury diving back into second base.

Ian Kennedy (9-9) gave up two runs while striking out nine in 5 1/3 innings.

Kelvin Herrera earned his 10th save.

Lorenzo Cain added a solo home run in the eighth inning.

The Royals starter had surrendered only three runs over his previous five starts, and thanks to the Red Sox’ inability to hit with runners in scoring position, Kennedy’s roll continued.

Hosmer had two hits and drove in three runs while Kendrys Morales and Alcides Escobar also had two hits. Royals manager Ned Yost said RHP Wade Davis, who has been on the DL since July 31 (retroactive to July 28) with a flexor strain, will pitch on a rehab assignment for Triple-A Omaha on Saturday and probably again Monday.

Red Sox: Rookie LF Andrew Benintendi went through another series of tests Friday which reaffirmed the original diagnosis of no structural damage to his sprained left knee. Yost said he doesn’t anticipate him returning before September 1. He was hurt during Boston’s loss to the Rays Wednesday night when he tried to avoid a tag while running toward second base. “And so for me I’ve just got to throw the ball over the plate with conviction”. Betts singled Pedroia home to cut the lead to 6-3, and the run ended an impressive streak of 412⁄3 scoreless innings for the Royals bullpen. It was the longest streak in the majors since the Kansas City A’s went 44 innings in 1966.

Raisman won her second Olympic gold medal as a member of the USA women’s gymnastics team in Rio, as well as two silver medals in the women’s individual all-around and floor exercise. The soon-to-be 32-year-old Californian went the distance in a losing effort at Kansas City on May 18, giving up three runs and five hits in the 3-2 setback.

With the excitement of the starters returning, Buchholz moving back to the bullpen the Sox lost a great young player in Benintendi for at least 15 days. His next strikeout will be the 500th of his career.
