Responding to Trump’s immigration plan to step up deportation, the Clinton campaign said his extreme right-wing agenda “is fueling a risky movement of hatred across the country”.

Mr Trump’s calling Mrs Clinton a bigot in a few speeches is likely to bounce off the Democratic nominee if that’s all there is. At the same time she is encouraging Americans to take seriously Trump’s controversial policy proposals, including a temporary ban on Muslim immigration and building a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border, she’s painting him as unprepared and temperamentally unfit for the presidency. Republican Donald Trump’s rallies draw far more people, as did Bernie Sanders’.

During a campaign rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, Trump said, “News reports are that Hillary Clinton is going to try and accuse this campaign and all of you and the millions of decent Americans… who support this campaign, your campaign of being racists, which we’re not”. They heaped scorn on the chief example cited by the AP of a donor Clinton met: Muhammad Yunus, who happens to be the Nobel Prize-winning father of microfinance, and whom she’s known for decades.

GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa, a leading immigration hardliner, said in an interview that “I have some concerns at this point” over Trump’s stances.

A statement Clinton issued on Monday said those changes will go into effect if Hillary Clinton is elected.

Last week, Mr Trump made a direct appeal to black voters during a rally in MI, where he told a almost all-white crowd that African-Americans “are living in poverty” and “their schools are no good”. Trump, meanwhile, leads among men and white voters.

Mocking her billionaire challenger, Clinton said, “Trump likes to say he only hires the ‘best people, ‘ but he’s had to fire so many campaign managers it’s like an episode of The Apprentice. He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties”, she added.

Bannon, Trump’s new campaign chairman, last month told Mother Jones magazine that Breitbart was “the platform for the alt-right” but he insisted the movement wasn’t racist even if it has attracted some people who are. “They want to obey the law”, Trump said. “I made policies based on what I thought was right”, Clinton said. “All I can say is, Donald, dream on”.

Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for Obama who helped with the president’s debate preparations, said Trump’s unpredictability “makes him incredibly hard to prepare for”. But Wednesday night, Trump escalated the line of attack and labeled Clinton herself a “bigot”.

Pushing back, Clinton spokesman Brian Fallon said the AP report relied on “pretty flawed methodology” and said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday that Clinton was being held to a different standard than other politicians with charitable work.
