49ers, minus Kaepernick, fall to Texans in exhibition opener

With Colin Kaepernick not playing due to lingering shoulder soreness, Blaine Gabbert had an opportunity to take the lead in the San Francisco 49ers’ lead quarterback competition during their game against the HoustonTexans Sunday. After Kaepernick skipped consecutive practices and was held out of Sunday’s game, Kelly adhered to the company line, that the ailment is not perceived as a long-term issue.

Fantasy Spin: New head coach Chip Kelly’s offense has the potential to turn whoever the starting quarterback is into a viable fantasy option. A couple of those were quarterback scrambles rather than designed runs, but the point still stands that for Kelly’s offense to rev at its best, the run game needs to be at the center of it. Offensively we’ll see speed-type tempo and those types of things. It’s just a day-to-day thing.

One of Kaepernick or Gabbert is likely to start with the other serving as the primary backup, but with rookie sixth-round pick Jeff Driskel as the only other signal-caller on the roster, Ponder provides some experience in case injuries should strike one of the team’s top two quarterbacks. The number one overall pick in the 2014 draft, Clowney’s biggest problem has been his inability to stay healthy, having missed 17 of a possible 32 games, plus a playoff game last January, in his first two seasons.

The 63-year-old Arians, a two-time National Football League coach of the year, is in his fourth season in Arizona. He completed 59.8 percent of his passes averaging 175 yards per game with 38 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

Tom Savage If you’re looking for an indicator of how classroom time and film study can impact a player’s development, look no further than Savage, who’s played nearly no football for the previous year, dating back to his season-ending injury in the 2015 preseason. With Gabbert, they could maybe reach six wins, but won’t get fewer than two.

“Taking it day-by-day”, he said. In January, he had two more on his left knee and throwing hand. From there, you had Jonathan Grimes, Akeem Hunt, and even Kenny Hilliard (12 carries, 40 yards) flash some of the good stuff last night and throughout camp. “My arm has always snapped back quick, so (I’m) not too concerned about it”.
