Earlier this week, North Korea test fired a submarine-based ballistic missile from its eastern coast days after the US and South Korea began their annual military exercises.

On Aug. 24, North Korea fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from the East Sea in defiance of past UNSC resolutions, prompting the council to hold an emergency meeting to discuss counteraction.

A previous bid by the council to condemn North Korea for firing a ballistic missile directly into Japanese-controlled waters on August 2 ran aground after China sought changes to the text.

In March, the Security Council imposed harsh new sanctions in response to North Korea’s fourth nuclear test in January and the launch of a long-range rocket in February. The statement came hours after the United Nations Security Council issued a statement strongly cond.

He said that the latest submarine-launched missile didn’t cause any harm to the security of neighboring countries.

Earlier this month, the 15-member council had been unable to agree on a US -drafted statement to condemn North Korea’s August 3 launch of a ballistic missile that landed in or near Japanese-controlled waters.

“The best way for the U.S.to escape a deadly strike from us is by refraining from insulting our dignity and threatening our security, by exercising prudence and self-control”, Jon said.

President Park Geun-hye warned Wednesday of North Korea’s increasingly “tangible” military threats to the south, the Korea Times said. “For a North Korean submarine to have survival capabilities [after a missile attack], they would need to develop and deploy a bigger SLBM”, he explained.

North Korea’s recent string of high-profile defections has led to speculations on whether the Kim Jong-un regime has become instable enough to have high level officials lose their loyalty to Kim and abandon their posts.

The council members also “stress the importance of working to reduce tensions in the Korean Peninsula and beyond”, which was language added from the original draft circulated on Thursday to all 15 members.
