Rough night for Wainwright, Cardinals in ugly 10-6 loss to Mets
“It looks like he is getting run down”, Collins said before the Mets’ 10-6 victory over the Cardinals on Thursday at Busch Stadium.

Lugo allowed two hits with three walks while striking out five going into the sixth.
It could have been a 3-0 deficit for the Cardinals had a call or a play gone the Cardinals’ way in the fifth inning. James Loney, who made another incredibly awkward play at first base later in the game, had a good night against Wainwright and went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. When several Cardinals chased the ball, Wainwright covered third base. Cespedes slid and his cleat pinned Wainwright’s glove to the bag, but when Wainwright pulled away his hand, the glove stayed stuck under Cespedes’ foot.
I have no idea if Cespedes should have been called out, if he was correctly called safe, or if everyone on the field should have been sent home and the game postponed for a later date for allowing for such an absurd play to occur, but from the replay it sure is hard to make a common sense argument that he’s safe.
Brandon Moss hit a two-run homer in the sixth against Jim Henderson after Lugo departed to get St. Louis on the scoreboard. “I’ve never seen it before, never heard of it before”.
“Tough one, man. It’s been a tough year for me”, Wainwright said. “I don’t know what else to say other than I’ve got to keep going”.
While rookie Seth Lugo exploited the Cardinals’ lack of knowledge about him, the Mets opened up a seven-run lead.
There’s a whole thing in baseball about the frequency with which you see things you’ve never seen before, and the reason it’s a whole thing is the actual frequency with which you see things you’ve never seen before.
Alejandro De Aza entered Thursday sporting a.189 batting average, a vestige of his miserable first-half of the season and a mark that made him a frequent target of derision from Mets fans.
“Anything that will help the team win the game, it feels great”, De Aza said. I don’t know what else to say, guys. De Aza then lined an 0-1 pitch over the wall in right for a three-run homer that made it 7-0. Garcia misplayed it. The error allowed Cespedes to score and brought de Aza back to the plate.
De Aza has been relegated to a part-time role this season, but he’s received more playing time in the second-half as the Mets’ only true center fielder. “He doesn’t have to like it, but he accepts it and gets himself ready”. Lugo started Thursday night in an important series finale against the Cardinals, and Gsellman is scheduled to make his first major league start Sunday, against the Phillies. He pitched five scoreless innings before a right calf cramp ended his outing in the Mets’ 10-6 win. Well, he shut us out over five innings and left the game with a 7-0 lead.
Mets: OF Jay Bruce (calf) was out of the lineup after leaving Wednesday night’s game with cramps.
Greg Garcia, on a fielders choice, reached first, Mets got the out at second and Piscotty in to add a run to cut the Mets lead in half, 8-4. He underwent surgery Thursday in Manhattan to fix a torn meniscus and likely is lost for the season. On Thursday, gave up two runs to the Cardinals – on two solo homers – in one inning.
MIAMI – Alcides Escobar homered and drove in two runs to lead the surging Kansas City Royals past the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Thursday night.
