Flight delays and cancellations are persisting Saturday in parts of the eastern U.S. after a technical failure at a flight control center in Virginia.
Andrew Robinson was supposed to have a layover in Baltimore before heading home to Chicago, only to find the flight canceled after being delayed multiple times.
Flights departing from Newark Liberty worldwide Airport in New Jersey and John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York that normally flight over the Washington region as they head southward were also affected, although the FAA had said it was trying to route the flights around the affected area. Some arriving flights were able to land during that period.
Reagan National Airport officials said the FAA will attempt to redirect flights around Washington airspace, but Washington area flights will remain on ground stop.
The FAA said it was working with carriers to resume normal service and that the problem “has nothing to do with an accident or hacking”. According to the flight-tracking website flightaware.com, 25% of scheduled departures from Reagan were canceled.
Thousands of travelers along the East Coast – and some in Atlanta – are facing delays due to some computer problems at the FAA office in Virginia.
