Giants Rookies Safeties Collins, Thompson Hurt In Preseason Opener

MORE: What happened in the preseason open? That group was already beset with manpower deficiencies and suffered several more injuries in the 23-10 defeat. Thompson, a fifth-round draft pick out of Texas, is done for the year. Young players would be getting valuable reps as Tom Coughlin and Steve Spagnuolo needed to find a pair they could put their faith in to play the two safety spots.

An MRI today revealed that the Giants’ other rookie safety, Landon Collins, sprained his medial collateral ligament early in the game.

“The other issue is: How quickly can Landon come back so that he doesn’t miss out on anything?” said Coughlin, who anticipated Collins missing more than a week. The Giants were hoping Thompson could contribute on special teams and in the secondary this season. He was injured while playing on the punt coverage team in the second quarter. Now they’re sidelined. “So certainly there is concern”. Collins’ presence as a run supporting safety was is something the Giants need after finishing dead last against the run last season.

“The level of concern has been there since day one, because of the nature of where we are”, Coughlin said.

Bennett Jackson and Justin Currie played well last night and both play the safety position. He looked better last night but nothing overly impressive.

Coughlin is hopeful Berhe will return to the field, perhaps this week.

“Let’s let them play and we’ll take it step by step”, Coughlin said.

“I thought our two days of controlled work against Cincinnati were better than the way in which we played”.

The inexperienced group of safeties for the New York Giants just lost two players. So hopefully we can continue to do that. The injuries probably will force him to work more at safety. “He did not warm up well, ” Coughlin said. “And you can never have enough of those guys anyway”.

-The Giants’ safety situation has apparently gone from good to dire all in a matter of six months.

Veteran backup Chykie Brown did not make the trip to Cincinnati after hurting a knee last weekend. Coughlin said Brown likely won’t return this week. Only Miles has started an NFL game.

“I was just trying to do my job, ” Beason said. “We’ll see”, he added. Now they’re looking for his replacement. “I don’t have anything for you yet from today, but we’re hoping that Hosley can be cleared to go here real quick”.

Berhe has been trying to battle back from a calf injury that has limited his appearances on the field and Jackson has been battling a quad problem.

And when it comes to the equally thin numbers at cornerback, he said: “You can count as well as I can”.

Wide receiver Rueben Randle, who missed one joint practice with Cincinnati last week and left another early, is still bothered by knee soreness. There were a few plays where he took questionable angles to the ball carrier but that can be fixed. Coughlin does not expect him to be back this coming week. I think the funniest thing I saw him do, besides the great celebrations that he had, just seeing him stiff-arm a guy against Cleveland and accelerate away. “He definitely was not himself”.

Coughlin commented on first-round draft choice Ereck Flowers before anyone could ask.

-WR Odell Beckham Jr., who last year missed the entire preseason, did not have a reception in the game. How will Tom Coughlin and his staff regroup and get these players ready?

“I remember catching myself in the middle of plays last year looking up at the JumboTron and Eli (Manning) is calling out the play”.
