Authorities say they’ve found a auto missing from the home of two nuns who were stabbed to death in Mississippi.
“Sanders was developed as a person of interest early on in the investigation”, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Director Jimmy Jordan said. She and Sister Margaret Held were stabbed inside their rural MS home Thursday morning.
Authorities said Sanders was being held in an undisclosed detention center pending a court appearance. Their work, for instance insuring local residents with diabetes received regular insulin injections and giving flu shots, was key to keeping the county’s hard-pressed health system going and their death leaves a huge hole, officials said.
The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, based near Bardstown, are mourning the loss of Sister Paula Merrill. “We mourn with the people of Lexington and Durant and we pray for the Sisters of Charity, the School Sisters of St. Francis and the families left behind”. Strain said “investigators believe Sanders acted alone”.
“She doesn’t deserve to die like this, doing God’s work”, he said, shaking his head outside the clinic.
And according to a nephew, David, Sister Merrill had been working with Sister Held for many years. “It’s so senseless”, the Rev. Greg Plata told a reporter on the scene, according to the Catholic Diocese of Jackson.
“Sister Paula would want me to forgive them”, Morgan said of whoever killed the sisters.
Their vehicle was found abandoned a mile away from their home, and there were signs of a break-in, but police haven’t released any leads or suspects in the investigation.
“They were two of the sweetest, most gentle women you can imagine”.
Dr. Elias Abboud, who worked with the sisters for years and helped build the clinic, said it provided about 25 percent of all medical care in the county.
Sanders was arrested late Friday in the deaths of two nuns whose bodies were found Thursday.
“We do more social work than medicine sometimes”, Merrill told The Journey.
Held grew up in Slinger, where she attended St. Peter’s Catholic School, said her cousin Irene Wolf.
