Smith, Chiefs look sharp in 23-7 victory over Bears

Fortunately for the Chicago Bears, pre-season games become irrelevant once the calendar turns to September. The Bears looked a little better in the second preseason game, a 23-22 loss to the Patriots. For the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs, we should expect at least a half out of each of their first units (minus a couple of starters for each), and one of the most important things for the Bears will be how their offensive line holds up against a very strong Chiefs defensive line.

The Chiefs are 5-1 ATS in their last six games, 7-3 ATS in their last 10 on grass, and and 1-4 ATS in their last five Saturday games while the Bears are 6-19-1 ATS in their last 26 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.

The Chiefs look to shake off a 21-20 loss on the road against the Los Angeles Rams last week as they take on a winless Bears side that will be out to prove they can contend in the NFC North this season with a strong finish to the National Football League preseason. In that case, the Bears could be in trouble. The veteran was injured when he was struck in the back of the head by teammate Harold Jones-Quarterly’s knee while making a tackle.

Bears’ starting quarterback Jay Cutler struggled as he completed 6 passes out of 15 attempts for a total of 45 yards. Starter Alex Smith was 9-of-12 passing for 137 yards and a touchdown while Spencer Ware rushed 10 times for 37 yards and a score to lead Kansas City in rushing.

Late in the game, fourth-string quarterback Connor Shaw hooked up with Cameron Meredith for a 16-yard strike to give the Bears their first touchdown at Soldier Field this exhibition season.

Shaw, however, left the game in a golf cart with 2:32 with a grisly left ankle injury.
