Utley’s four-hit performance may have been his Phillies farewell

Herrera, whose wild throw to the plate on Segura’s hit allowed the Brewers shortstop to get to second base in the first place, also made a catch against the wall one inning earlier.

Peralta (3-7) had his best start this year, and Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 27th save in 27 tries this season despite Chase Utley’s RBI single. The Brewers have seen good things from Shane Peterson in the outfield, and Braun and Khris Davis will return, but there is one spot in the outfield that is without a doubt up for grabs in 2016. And what’s the point if at that time you again deal them all away because you failed to have a winning season?

Before the game, the scroll on the TV in the visitor’s clubhouse questioned if Utley could be effective with the swirl of trade talks surrounding him. Manager Craig Counsell said the injury likely ends Blazek’s season. Now with Utley back in the fold, Hernandez will see a day off here and there but, it is tough to keep him out of the lineup with the way he has been swinging the bat since the all-star break.

Milwaukee tacked on a pair of runs in the third inning, as third baseman Hernan Perez led off with a double and scored on a one-out single to left-center field by Segura. The runner got in there.

This core of young arms includes the names all Brewers fans know by now: Wily Peralta, Jimmy Nelson, Taylor Jungmann, Tyler Cravy; as well as a few lesser known names acquired two weeks ago: Josh Hader, Adrian Houser, Zach Davies, and Preston Guilmet, who just works out of the bullpen.

“Days like this happen”, he said. “For me, I threw two pitches in a game and I was more of in a shocked state that the game was already over and I didn’t really get to throw too much than upset”. Phillies not named Utley recorded just five hits, one of which being a bunt single by shortstop Freddy Galvis in the second inning. Segura broke hard from second and never stopped as third-base coach Ed Sedar waved him home.

The Brewers placed RHP Michael Blazek on the 15-day disabled list with a fracture in his right hand. Blazek couldn’t pinpoint how he was hurt… Franco left the game Tuesday after getting hit on the wrist by a pitch.

To replace Blazek on the 25-man roster, the Brewers recalled right-hander David Goforth from Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 26-year-old’s numbers have been inflated by a handful of disastrous outings, but he bounced back with a solid showing in his last turn, holding St. Louis to three runs over seven innings in a 3-0 defeat. He made 20 relief appearances and 17 starts for the Sounds, finishing with a 4-4 record, a 4.15 ERA and 1.431 WHIP in 102 innings.
