‘Sausage Party’ gets nasty in the supermarket
Sausage Party is in theaters now. But it doesn’t merely anthropomorphize the food. In the film, anthropomorphised foodstuffs dream of being placed in the shopping trolley and leaving the supermarket, but they get a shock when they see humans cutting up their “relatives”.

Sausage Party reviews are pouring in, and viewers who have not been previous fans of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who also created This Is The End and Superbad, were not likely to appreciate the stoner humor. While This Is the End kept its thoughts on the afterlife confined mostly to its finale, Sausage Party is pretty much a nonstop argument against the existence of God. The foods and condiments and candies begin every day with a rousing song about The Great Beyond and the Gods, each putting their own spin on it (i.e. the German mustard has added a line about exterminating Juice).
Hayek voices a taco named Teresa who has the hots for a hotdog bun played by Kristen Wiig. And, when a returned jar of Honey Mustard (Danny McBride) raves about the apocalyptic murder and destruction in kitchens, Frank sets into motion a plan to save himself and Brenda from such a fate. Or the clever feud between Lavash flatbread and Sammy Bagel because the Middle Eastern food aisle is next to the kosher section.
Frank and his friend Barry (Michael Cera) discovered the terrible truth with the help of a problematic liquor bottle and a chewed gum.
The only day I interacted with any of the other cast members was when we shot a live-action alternate ending, which I don’t believe made it into the final version of the film. It’s what distinguishes them from the anything goes satire of Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
In cooking up a filthy R-rated animation – one that came within touching distance of landing a NC-17 rating – co-directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan assembled a who’s who of Hollywood talent for Sausage Party.
Rogen and Goldberg openly admit that the characters are, indeed, racially stereotyped. “Sausage Party” is rated R for perverse language, drug use and strong, crude sexual content.
