Trevor Siemian got his second straight start Saturday night in his bid to win the Broncos’ starting quarterback job. It happened on a special teams play, and the Broncos announced later in the third quarter that he won’t return to the field. The drive was extended by a penalty on cornerback Bradley Roby for an illegal hit on a defenseless receiver.Sean Mannion, who finished for the Rams, completed 6 of 12 passes for 43 yards though he had three incompletions and was sacked after a 73-yard run by Terrance Magee had given the Rams a first-and-goal at the 7. That set up a 50-yard field goal by Brandon McManus that made it 10-9 at halftime. He completed 8/12 passes for 77 yards. He also led an eight-play, 41-yard drive in the third quarter that ended with a seven-yard Ronnie Hillman (five carries, 45 yards) touchdown run.

Siemian led one touchdown drive, one field goal drive and threw an interception.

The Rams’ defense did not allow second-half points in either of its first two preseason games, and got a stop on Denver’s first series of the second half but not the second. And on the fourth one, Trumaine Johnson provided exceptional coverage of Cody Latimer on a deep ball up the sidelines, tipping it to Cody Davis for an interception. Seven days after scoring his first touchdown – by running an out and reaching for the pylon for an 11-yard score – Cooper came across the middle, extended with his left hand, tipped the ball to himself and secured a catch on third down.

Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian (13) thaws as Los Angeles Rams defensive end Eugene Sims (97) pursues during the first half of an NFL preseason football game, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, in Denver. If he’s not on the 53-man roster, the Broncos will save $3.5 million and the seventh-round draft pick they would have owed the Eagles.

As expected, rookie first-round pick Paxton Lynch was next and replaced Siemian to start the second half.
