Joe Biden Gives Erdogan a Lesson in Democracy
Previously, Turkish authorities sent two requests to the USA for extradition of Fethullah Gulen, who is accused of organizing the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey.

Biden refused to promise that the US would hand over Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the USA since 1999, saying that it is a matter for the American justice system to decide. We cannot make a distinction between good or bad terrorist organisations.
We have “no interest whatsoever in protecting anyone who has done harm to an ally”, Biden said. At that, Biden put his face in his hands.
Erdogan and Yildirim don’t sound like they’re interested in “moving on” at all.

He said the bravery and resilience of the Turkish people defeated the coup attempt, which aimed to destroy Turkey’s democracy, the principle of secularism, and the vibrancy of Turkish society.
Biden sought to dispel any notion of USA complicity in the uprising, calling those who carried out the attack “cowardly, treasonous”.
“This is devastating, can you imagine if this happened at home?”
“When you go into an American court you can not say “this is a bad guy”. And so let’s move on”, said Biden, who is due to meet Erdogan later in the day.
Biden and Yıldırım spoke at a news conference following a meeting that also discussed human rights issues in Turkey. The requirements are spelled out in a treaty between the US and Turkey, signed in 1979, that allows for extradition for crimes recognized in both countries.
“The Constitution and our laws require for someone to be extradited that a court of the United States has to conclude there’s probably cause to extradite”, Biden said, explaining that the judicial branch is co-equal with Congress and the president.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has told his Turkish counterpart that Syrian Kurdish forces have started withdrawing east of the Euphrates River, Turkish officials said Thursday. A team of Department of Justice investigators is in Turkey to further review evidence. Biden called on Turkish authorities on Wedn.
The US Department of Justice, Akerman added, must provide clear documentation that shows there is good reason to believe Gulen is guilty of crime before shipping him overseas at Ankara’s behest. “It’s totally understandable why the people of Turkey are angry”. But he reaffirmed the US willingness to cooperate in the case of the USA -based Muslim cleric, Fethullah Gulen.
Vice President Joe Biden is urging Turkey to be patient with the US legal system. He repeatedly voiced support for Turkey – a crucial ally in the fight against Islamic State – and its leadership.
“The United States of America did not, did not, have any foreknowledge of what befell you on the 15th”, Biden told reporters, with Prime Minister Binali Yildirim at his side before the meeting with Erdogan. The death toll in these attacks, admittedly, were unequal: There were 10 times more victims on 9/11 than during Turkey’s coup. He said Turkish officials reassured him that the “rule of law” would be followed. So Turkey, having submitted a request, says Gulen should be turned over immediately – or “at least be detained, arrested and kept under surveillance” while the process plays out, Erdogan said on Wednesday.
On Wednesday Turkish broadcaster CNN Turk reported that another 2,800 judges and prosecutors had been fired. The other part is a four-decade-old meticulous infiltration of key state institutions such as the military, judiciary and the police.

Erdogan said Ankara and Washington were strategic partners and keeping Gulen would not benefit the United States.
