Smith’s replacement Warner has not captained Australia in any format, and now takes charge in a tour in which he has been in indifferent form.
Smith flew home after Australia’s 82-run defeat in the second ODI of their five-match series, with national selectors opting to rest their captain.

Then came the announcement that captain Steve Smith would return home mid-series in order to rest ahead of the upcoming ODI tour of South Africa and home summer. They would not put it in such strong terms, but Sri Lanka do not rate David Warner against offspin – at least not at the beginning of his innings.
“Nathan had been experiencing a gradual increase in lower back pain which is now preventing him from bowling at match intensity”, Australia physiotherapist David Beakley said.

He will not be replaced in the one-day squad, with cover provided by Victorian pace-bowlers John Hastings and Scott Boland.
