May 27, 2016 – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts a near-normal hurricane season, predicting that there is a 70 percent chance of having 10 to 16 named storms, of which four to eight could develop into hurricanes, including one to four major hurricanes (categories 3-5).
The third area of note is a weak trough of low pressure located south of the coast of southwestern Louisiana, which is producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity over the north-central Gulf of Mexico.
The hurricane center gave the system only a 10 percent chance of development but said it would reach the coast of Texas on Sunday and bring more rain to the area in the process. “Strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Gaston is expected to become a hurricane by tonight”, the NHC said. “Also with rather high uncertainty, additional unsettled weather associated with Tropical Cyclone Lester may affect the state over Labor Day holiday weekend”. At the time this image was taken, Gaston had maximum sustained winds near 60 miles per hour and was dumping copious amounts rain in North and SC. It was moving northwest at 17 miles per hour.
Southern Florida is bracing for heavy rains from a tropical disturbance that could strengthen into a tropical storm.
As a note, the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) continues to closely monitor Tropical Storm Gaston. Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall in South Carolina, Colin in western Florida, Danielle in eastern Mexico, Earl in Belize and Mexico.
