Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo out indefinitely

Romo left the Cowboys’ pre-season game against the Seattle Seahawks after just three plays after taking a heavy hit from Hawks defender Cliff Avril and coach Jason Garrett revealed that an MRI scan had shown the fracture.

The Cowboys quarterback is expected to miss a significant amount of time following the injury but reportedly will not require surgery, according to ESPN’s Ed Werder.

Romo suffered the injury when he took a hit to his back on the third play of the Cowboys’ preseason clash with the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday.

That means rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott, who has had an outstanding preseason, will quarterback the Cowboys when they face the Giants Week 1. Romo wanted to come back in, but head coach Jason Garrett opted to let him sit.

Ian Raport of the NFL Network reports that the “best-case scenario” is Romo will be back “by mid-season”. He played in only four games previous year, and his last 16-game season came in 2012.

Garrett said Romo’s injury won’t end his season.

Initially Romo believed that he was healthy enough to return, but it seems the 36-year-old could instead be facing a lengthy absence this season. “The name of the game for us has always been focusing on taking things one day at a time and also have the “next man in” mentality”.

Romo was eventually able to leave the field on his own, which allowed fans to breath a sigh of relief.
