Oklahoma City Thunder player Enes Kanter tweeted, “I’m sorry for your loss my man. @DwyaneWade Thoughts and prayers with your family”. Outside the hospital where Aldridge was taken, her aunt told reporters she had just participated in a panel discussion at the South Side YMCA Thursday about the violence plaguing the city. The child was protected by a neighbor and was not injured.

She is the cousin of 12-time NBA All-Star Dwayne Wade, who recently signed a contract with his hometown team the Chicago Bulls.

“It breaks our hearts”, he said, speaking in front of a hay-bale backdrop at a Des Moines fundraiser hosted by Senator Joni Ernst. “It’s terrible, it’s awful, and it’s only getting worse”. This shouldn’t happen in our country.

Pence was echoed by Republican national committee chair Reince Priebus, who said that Trump’s Wade tweet was a result of the candidate’s “frustration” with the inner city quandary. Trump commented on her death on Twitter.

In recent days, Trump has aggressively tried to win over black voters, arguing that Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton and Democratic lawmakers who for decades have run major US cities have neglected their African-American residents by being soft on crime while providing inadequate public schooling and few job opportunities.

As you might expect, Twitter unloaded on Trump for his tone deaf and incendiary Tweet. “We must be smart!”

But later, during a rally in Iowa, Trump referenced the tragedy again as he continued his push to try and appeal to African-American voters by pointing to high levels of violence in some communities.

He said crime and poverty in urban America “offends my sense of right and wrong to see anyone living in such conditions”.

“They are living in bad, awful conditions – beyond belief conditions”. Just what I have been saying. I will fix it. African-Americans, Hispanics, vote for Donald Trump. I will fix it. “And I add – and I add it in all sincerity – what do you have to lose?”

Trump’s tweet appeared to be his latest effort to convince African-American voters to choose him over Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, highlighted by a meeting with African-American and Hispanic Republican leaders at New York’s Trump Tower last week.
