The Cardinals Lost Their 59th Game

It doesn’t matter how much power the Cardinals have at the plate, they can not swing their way out of the quicksand created by inconsistent pitching and unreliable defense. Another not-so-hot outing from Adam Wainwright and another sloppy defensive game for the Cardinals. I don’t know what else to say, guys. Of the seven runs Wainwright allowed, only two were earned runs. On the play, Wainwright appeared to tag the Mets Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespedes tried to go from first to third on a bloop single by James Loney. When several Cardinals chased the ball, Wainwright covered third base. Umpire Marty Foster had his fist cocked as if to call Cespedes out, but pivoted to a safe call when he saw Wainwright lose his glove to Cespedes’ foot.

Alejandro De Aza pinch-ran for Bruce and scored on Cabrera’s double to even the score at 1.

“I’ve said it before, my intentions of course are to be here for three years, and if I could spend the rest of my career with the Mets, I would”, Cespedes said. Moments later, De Aza hit a three-run homer to make it 7-0.

“It’s another game we lose that I start”, Wainwright said. That error allowed a run to score to give the Mets a 4-0 lead and De Aza followed with a three-run homer into the bullpen in right-center for a 7-0 advantage. St. Louis opened the scoring in the first when Carpenter, back in the leadoff spot after not driving in a run in his last 33 at-bats while hitting third or second, cracked his 16th home run of the year and the 12th leadoff homer of his career.

Mets manager Terry Collins wants to have a conversation with general manager Sandy Alderson about pushing back deGrom, but it might be tough to accomplish. “These last two have been frustrating, but I’ve got another one in five days so I have to get ready for that one”.

“We’re looking at every series now like that, I don’t care who is playing”, Collins said of must-win series. Lugo nonetheless earned his first major league win, and his first win since May 10 with Triple-A Las Vegas.

The New York Mets are running out of time and starting pitchers at a dizzying clip. Lugo looked poised to go deep into the contest, allowing only two hits over five shutout innings while tossing 82 pitches, but his calf cramped up while warming up prior to the sixth inning.

He also had the Marlins’ first two hits, hiking his average to.286, and improved to 27-2 at home. I’ve just got to keep going and good things are going to happen.

New York Mets right fielder Jay Bruce made an early exit Wednesday night against St. Louis because of a cramp in his right calf. LHP Jonathon Niese (left knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery to fix a meniscus tear.

Cardinals: Matt Adams (right shoulder inflammation) began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Memphis. He batted second and hit a two-run homer Thursday for the Redbirds.

Niese is 8-7 with a 5.50 ERA in 29 games, 20 of them starts.
