Two home runs by Salvador Perez was not enough for the Kansas City Royals Saturday night.
Wright hadn’t allowed two home runs in a game all season, but surrendered two in the first inning to the Royals.
It’s not often that an entire ballpark has their eyes glued to the plate during a six-run game in August, but when Dustin Pedroia stepped into the batter’s box in the eighth inning last night, everyone in the Red Sox dugout was perched on the top step.
The Red Sox scored 7 runs off of Danny Duffy who had won his last 10 games. Manager John Farrell said the tests revealed no structural damage and just a sprained left knee.
We’re seeing the same kind of slump that Bradley fell into in previous seasons, where even contact is hard to find, with nine strikeouts in the last 16 at-bats.
“Good stuff, but just had trouble putting it where he wanted to”, Royals manager Ned Yost said. “He was kind of wild in the zone a little bit”.
Cain hit the Royals’ third home run leading off eighth against reliever Junichi Tazawa for a 6-2 lead. Wright, who had been on the disabled list before Friday, finished with five runs allowed on seven hits in six innings. In the bottom of the ninth inning Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts greeted Moylan with back-to-back singles.
“It’s baseball. It’s a insane game”, Pedroia said. But I expect better than that. “So definitely the positive taken out of it for me was I felt good”.
After belting out 11 straight hits, the Boston Red Sox second baseman came up to the plate in the eighth inning Saturday with a chance to tie the Major League Baseball mark for most consecutive hits. The mark of hits in 12 straight at-bats is shared by Walt Dropo for Detroit in 1952, Pinky Higgins of the Red Sox in 1938 and Johnny Kling of the Cubs in 1902. Kennedy allowed more hits than his counterpart and went just shy of an inning shorter, but only gave up two earned runs. Pedroia singled and Bogaerts ripped a two-run job over the Monster to give Boston a 2-0 lead. After Hill was retired, Jackie Bradley Jr. came up and roped an RBI double, giving Boston a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Betts delivered an RBI single but Kelvin Herrera extinguished the Red Sox rally for his 10th save.
In the sixth, Pedey got his fourth hit and 11th straight.
Betts hit his 29th, a solo shot, in the fifth and Ramirez followed with his two pitches later to almost the same spot, two rows into the Monster seats about three fans apart. After watching Ramirez’s drive land in the seats, Duffy just smiled in disbelief as he waited for a new ball from home plate umpire Adrian Johnson.
The Red Sox’ outburst was more impressive because it came against one of the hottest pitchers in baseball.
