Sharmila was released on bail on August 9 last after she declared breaking her almost 16 years old fasting stir demanding scraping the draconian Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, 1958. The special ward had been her home for the duration of the fast.

Irom Chanu Sharmila, who ended her 16-year-long fast against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act a fortnight ago, began her life outside hospital today.

Sounding optimistic, Sharmila said her exit from the hospital is a new step.

She expressed her desire to open an office of her own so that she could continue her movement against AFSPA with the people’s support.

The “Iron Lady” of Manipur will be attending the Global Youth Peace Festival which is to be held in Chandigarh from the September 27 to October 2.

“I am preparing for contesting the election”. The court will have its final hearing on Sept 5 and to set her free from all charges leveled against her. After leaving the hospital, where she was force-fed through the nose for 16 years, she visited Kangla fort, and offered prayers at three sacred places. Meanwhile some of her supporters are busy for applying Sharmila’s legal documents such as Voters or Aadhar cards besides PAN (Personal Account Number) cards so that she can respond to the invitations from various quarters for public campaigns. Sharmila will now spend a few days at an ISKON-run ashram located on the city’s outskirts.
