Nykea Aldridge, a 32-year-old mother of four, was pushing her baby in a stroller near the school when two men walked up and fired shots at a third man but hit Aldridge in the head and arm.

Nykea Aldridge’s famous relative, who grew up in Chicago’s south suburbs, tweeted to his almost 6 million followers about her death, saying Friday it was an “act of senseless gun violence” and posting Saturday morning that Chicago needs “more help& more hands on deck”.

Aldridge is the first cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, and the niece of Chicago pastor Jolinda Wade, the basketball player’s mom.

“My cousin was killed today in Chicago”.

Police have not said why the shooting occurred, but they believe Aldridge was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire.

26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, have each been charged with first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, police said Sunday.

Chicago has been flooded with gun violence for years and recorded 381 homicides this year by the end of July. The nation’s third largest city has recorded more homicides than NY and Los Angeles combined so far this year.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump chose to use the tragedy as an opportunity to call attention to his political campaign, taking to his own Twitter account on Saturday morning (27Aug16) to comment on Wade’s post. We need more help & more hands on deck.

“Dwyane Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago”, Trump tweeted.

“This is one particular time our family wished we didn’t have to be speaking to the media about anything”, Jolinda Wade said.

Wade’s nephew Darin Johnson was one of six people shot by two gunmen in a South Side convenience store in 2012.

After a cascade of critical tweets, Trump posted another message, saying “My condolences to Dwyane Wade and his family, on the loss of Nykea Aldridge”.

This comes after Trump recently boosted his message to black voters by saying their lives “cannot get any worse, and believe me, I’m gonna fix it”.

Trump’s tweet appeared to be his latest effort to convince African-American voters to choose him over Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, highlighted by a meeting with African-American and Hispanic Republican leaders at New York’s Trump Tower last week.
