“The biggest problem he had with Archer (School for Girls) is the number of Jews who attend”, she also said in the court declaration.

The abuse allegations against Bannon surfaced, as Clinton and her allies have been highlighting Trump’s history of making derogatory remarks about women.

Bannon, the former head of the ultra-conservative Breitbart News website was appointed the head of the Trump campaign last week, in a shakeup of the Republican candidate’s campaign leadership.

“At the time, Mr. Bannon never said anything like that and proudly sent the girls to Archer for their middle school and high school educations”, Preate said.

Asked about the old charges, Bannon’s personal spokeswoman, Alexandra Preate, noted they had been dismissed.

Piccard filed for divorce in January 1997, just over a year after she told police Bannon roughed her up on New Year’s Day 1996 following a spat over money, in which she spit on him. Bannon was charged with three misdemeanor domestic violence-related charges and pleaded not guilty.

She made the declaration as part of a dispute over child support. The charges were dismissed six months later after prosecutors said they could not find his wife.

While neighbours told the Miami Herald they could not remember seeing Bannon at the property, conservative pundit and Trump supporter A.J. Delgado claimed that Bannon had indeed lived there. The charges reportedly were dropped after Bannon threatened Piccard with retribution if she testified against him.

Those court records show Bannon was charged with three misdemeanors in Santa Monica, California, on February 22, 1996, when the twins were infants.

Bannon also has faced scrutiny in recent days over his voter registration and his former wife’s claim that he attacked her during an argument in 1996.

A police report obtained by the AP said he grabbed her wrist and “grabbed at” her neck.

The wife then tried to dial 911 and Bannon “jumped over her and the twins to grab the phone from her”, the report said.

The tough headlines about Bannon follow a wave of staff upheavals at the top levels of Trump’s campaign as he seeks to beef up his political operation for the fall campaign.
