According to NJ Transit, “Officer Ortiz, without regard for his own safety, was determined to save the individual’s life even as the man struggled against the officer’s efforts to pull him out of harm’s way”.
“He said “no, I’m not going to jail, I’m not going to jail”, and he jumped down into the pit of Track A”, Ortiz tells WABC.
Security footage showed Ortiz dragging the suicidal man off the tracks as he struggled to stay put for the train. Seconds later, an NJ Transit train arrives.
After a short conversation with Ortiz, the man intentionally laid in the path of an oncoming train and refused to move. Victor Ortiz, a 16-year veteran of the force, arrived at the scene and observed a man exiting a train auto.
