But both occupants of the vehicle were later pronounced dead, Devon and Cornwall Police said in a statement.

The driver and passenger were airlifted to hospital but they did not survive.
The family of a woman who was tragically killed in a auto accident at Hooe Lake have paid tribute to the “vibrant” and “adored” grandmother.
Formal identification is yet to take place, but next of kin have been informed while the vehicle has been recovered from Hooe Lake and is being examined by experts.
Paul added: “I managed to get down but couldn’t open the windows”.
‘The doors were either locked or held shut. I wish there was more I could have done’.
Police and members of the public went into the lake and tried to save the people inside the auto, managing to pull the man from the vehicle.
“I drove past and was then flagged down by two dog walkers, who were pointing frantically at the lake”. Witness John Wheeler said he could see several four or five people in the water trying to help but they could not even see the vehicle at first as it was submerged.
‘He deserves recognition for what he did, and so does the officer.
“It was incredibly courageous and he gave it his all but unfortunately, he couldn’t save them”, he said.
Emergency services were called to Hooe Lake in Plymouth yesterday afternoon at 1.55pm after reports a Peugeot 407 SW estate had entered the water and ended up on its roof. I’m going to be recommending the police officer for some sort of commendation.

In a statement given to The Herald the family of the woman, named as Barbara or Barb, paid tribute to the mother and grandmother.
