GMR Infra to develop Mopa airport in Goa

Panaji: GMR Airport Limited won the bid to build the global greenfield airport at Mopa, which is estimated to cost over 4,500 crore.
The GMR Group also owns and operates Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport which is presently ranked as world’s top airport in its passenger category, as well as Hyderabad airport, which has been consistently ranked among the world’s top three in its category over the last seven years, the statement said.
The ascertained revenue offered to the Goa government was nearly 36.99% more than present bidders. The total cost of airport is Rs 3250 crore. AAI offered 32.31% and Essel Infra Project Limited offered 27%. The area where the second Airport will be build is known for its beaches and fishing villages adhered to a Portuguese Colonies.
The airport will be built under the BOT (Build Operate Transfer) model.
In comparison, operators of two of India’s biggest airports – in Mumbai and in Delhi – share 37 per cent and 46 per cent, respectively. Following the completion of construction, the signing of the concession agreement with the winning bidder would be for 40 years, which might be extended for next 20 years. At present the Goa worldwide airport at Dabolim handles 5.5 million passenger per annum. Flights are expected to start around 2020.

Once being fully operational, Mopa airport will have the capacity to handle nine million passengers per annum.
