Former Tiger Jefry Marte drives in three in Angels victory

Kaleb Cowart’s first home run of the season, a two-run fly ball to right in the third inning and strong relief pitching by scratched scheduled starter Jhoulys Chacin led the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-2 victory over Detroit in a game marked by two Tigers players, their manager and hitting coach being ejected for disputing home plate umpire Mike Everitt’s strike zone. Detroit meanwhile wasted a base runner in each of the first three innings – a two-out single from Miguel Cabrera in the 1st, a two-out walk to Casey McGehee in the 2nd, and a hit batsman to lead off the 3rd.

On Friday night, the Detroit Tigers didn’t score until the sixth inning, but four late runs were more than enough for Verlander to beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2. The Tigers run extended to five games following Friday night’s victory behind a great performance on the mound from Justin Verlander. In the sixth, J.D. Martinez was called out, looked back at Everitt and was ejected.

Michael Fulmer (10-5) allowed five hits in five innings but this was his first start in a week and he had trouble with his control.

“I’ve never been ejected in a game”, Martinez said.

“You knew that was going to be a battle with Frankie and Albert out there, ” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. During that hot streak, which dates to July 2, the 33-year-old has permitted two runs or fewer on nine occasions and has failed to pitch at least six innings only once.

Sanchez faced the minimum through the first three innings.

Martinez, who earned his fourth career ejection with the animated tirade, was replaced by outfielder Tyler Collins as designated hitter.

In Los Angeles, Kris Bryant hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the 10th inning to go with an earlier solo shot, lifting Chicago over the hosts.

Angels: Scioscia said 3B Yunel Escobar’s concussion symptoms are stabilizing and he could return to some baseball activities early next week. In making his first scoreless start of the season, Griffin didn’t allow a home run for the first time in 12 starts. “There won’t be a rehab assignment, but he’s going to need a couple days, I think, to make sure he’s ready, Scioscia said”.

Skaggs pitched a clean 1-2-3 shut down inning in the 5th and 6th innings to keep the Tigers’ bats quiet. Sanchez has recorded a quality start in each of his four home starts since the All-Star break.
