Twins’ bullpen depleted in extra-inning loss to Royals

The Twins bullpen was short on available arms a night after they lost to the Royals in 11 innings in a rain-delayed affair that lasted almost seven hours total. Berrios walked Alex Gordon on four pitches. Outfielders charging in on balls hit over the heads, failure to communicate on pop flies, trouble picking up the ball cleanly and throws that had a better chance of hitting a beer vendor than anyone wearing a Twins uniform.

Houston, which mustered 14 hits, can take the four-game series with a victory Sunday.

Danny Duffy has done a tremendous job, but you have to remember that he started the year off in the bullpen.

With the 27 year old eligible for arbitration at the end of the season (he makes $4.2 million this year) and a free agent after the 2017 season, like numerous Royals best players (Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, Mike Moustakas). And on Sunday, his teammates were making a lot of plays.

Hosmer singled in the second, moved to third on Kendrys Morales’ double and scored on Alcides Escobar’s ground out for the first Kansas City run.

The Twins loaded the bases in the second with none out and came away empty.

MARLINS 3, PIRATES 1 Xavier Scruggs hit his first major league home run and David Phelps pitched six scoreless innings to help visiting Miami beat Pittsburgh.

The Minnesota Twins appeared to be finally in a groove a few weeks ago but have been fading since.

The Twins tied it in the third when Robbie Grossman doubled and scored on Plouffe’s two-out double. Perez homered into the Royals’ bullpen with two out and Gordon homered on a 3-1 pitch, his first multi-homer game since May 18, 2014.

“We talked briefly after the game about our defense and the plays that happened are not that uncommon”, Molitor said.

REDS 11, DODGERS 1: Brandon Finnegan took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, Adam Duvall and Jose Peraza each hit home runs in returns to the lineup and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Upton, hitting.228 at game time, was in his second game back from three days of not starting.

Gordon homered twice and doubled, Kennedy pitched eight sharp innings and the Royals extended their winning streak to seven games, beating the Minnesota Twins 10-0 Saturday night.

So Gordon made a play that robbed the Twins of a run and Jorge Polanco missed a play that gave the Royals a run.

He took the mound before a crowd of 48,113 – the Rockies’ third sellout of the season – gave up a single to start the game and then retired nine batters in a row while facing the minimum number of hitters through the third.

And the unwritten rules often concern how the written rules will be interpreted. When it comes to scoring, the Twins haven’t performed as well against teams from the AL Central. “If they get behind in the count and it’s a fastball count, then we’ll swing it”.

Getaway Day is the day teams have to travel and umpires are in the same situation. In games decided by a margin of 10 runs or more, the Twins are 2-4. “I’m sorry.’ A (guy) said, ‘Well, it’s my birthday.’ I said, ‘good, happy birthday, mine is tomorrow.’ And they said really”.

But since most of the people who participated in Sunday’s game had a plane to catch, everybody wanted a quick game. Tom Wilhelmsen got the call. “I knew as soon as she got pregnant that we’d probably be out here on the West Coast, whether it was here or Arizona or St. Louis, we knew that was going to be challenging”. The longer the team waits, the more money Duffy could receive in free agency (assuming he continues to pitch the way he has). There was a 3-hour, 3-minute delay before play resumed 16 minutes before midnight local time.
