ISI chief Hamid Gul passed away in Murree after suffering a

Former chief of the Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) General (Retd) Hamid Gul died of a mind haemorrhage in Murree late Saturday, DawnNews reported.

Hamid Gul served as Director General ISI from 1987 to 1989.

Born on 20 November 1936, the three-star general joined the Pakistan Army in October 1956. He quickly got confirmation in Government College Lahore, before answering to Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, Abbottabad.

During the 1965 Indo-Pak war, Mr Gul was a tank commander.

Later on, he was replaced as the ISI commander by PM Benazir Bhutto in May 1989 and transferred as the commander of II Corps in Multan.

Gul was known as the father of the Taliban and for promoting hard-line policies against India, including diverting mujahedeen who fought the Soviets to Kashmir to foment an insurgency.

Her daughter, Uzma Gul has also confirmed the news.

General also remained active on the political scene as well, both during and after his career, with his formation of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) and his support for the reinstatement of former Chief Justice of Pakistan Chaudhary Iftikhar. Gul faced down riot police when they tried to arrest him at a rally outside the Supreme Court in Islamabad protesting against attempts to dismiss Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
