James Milner’s well-taken penalty gave the visitors a deserved lead at half-time, with Philippe Coutinho having earlier spurned a couple of decent opportunities to put Liverpool ahead.

Spurs remained on the back-foot, but they were level in the 72nd minute when Rose collected a loose ball inside the Liverpool box before somehow finding the bottom corner past the advancing Mignolet.
Jurgen Klopp returns to the scene of his first game as Liverpool manager at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday, still searching for an effective winning formula.
“I’m really happy that we have him”.
In his programme notes, the Argentine manager eulogised over their start to the season, gaining four points in two games, but looked for his side to gain momentum with victory over Liverpool. A few other players had more pre-season.
And Vorm’s man of the match display also wasn’t enough to stop the Tottenham team coach leaving without him after the game. “But I can only pick 11 players to start and I never make a decision like this against one player”, he told reporters.
Asked about the comments by Souness, Klopp said: “Actually, why should I think about something like this?”
He said that Liverpool’s performance “showed again” that they can “be really good” which he called upon they to “show in each game”, saying if they do then “everything will be good”.
“When we played like this then I think we could have won the game, but it is like it is”.
He said: “It’s not a flawless break as all the global players are involved again, it’s hard”.
Spurs’ draw meant that they have taken five points from their first three games and Pochettino still feels they are “a bit behind” where they should be in terms of fitness.
Kyle Walker was forced off through illness just before the half-hour mark, with Pochettino introducing Vincent Janssen in his stead in an effort to spark life back into Spurs’ attacking play.
The next round of domestic fixtures is being staged on September 10 due to World Cup qualifying and arrives only two months after Euro 2016.
They were handed their chance to do so when Lamela’s pressure on Firmino resulted in an unfortunate clip of the Brazilian’s heel and the referee pointed to the spot.
And late on when Klopp wanted to bring on a more traditional forward with 20 minutes to go, it was Divock Origi who was chosen – much to the distate of Daniel Sturridge as you can see above.

Throughout the first half, Liverpool were able to release Sadio Mane into the space behind Jan Vertonghen, who looked very shaky during the opening hour.
