A broad area of disturbed weather designated 99-L will continue to move westward toward Cuba today and potentially into the Gulf of Mexico late this weekend.

The system is moving west-northwest through the Straits of Florida at 10 miles per hour, the center said.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles.

There has been little change to the system, according to the Miami-based center.

Heavy rains are expected to hit South Florida Sunday, and Tampa Bay could be drenched soon too. This could mean more bad news for flood tired parts of Louisiana and Texas.: However, certainty is low and only time will tell. Interests elsewhere in Florida and the eastern Gulf of Mexico should continue to monitor the progress of this disturbance.

Here at home, rain chances seem to be increasing over the weekend.

The rest of Central Florida will be under partly cloudy skies for most of the day, which also keeps our temperatures on the lower side.

Widely scattered showers and storms pop up Saturday afternoon and fade by sunset. This is great news and IF it’s able to survive and eventually try to strengthen, it would only mean a few extra showers for us Sunday and Monday and maybe a slight breeze. Although the systems isn’t organized, it’s still a wave of thunderstorms and disturbed weather that’s expected to bring heavy rain to South Florida early Sunday.
