Rihanna went on the note the award’s connection to all of the people who’ve felt represented by her work and presence as an artist. She kept things more downbeat for this last set; performing “Needed Me” and “Pour It Up” with foreboding backlighting and smoky surroundings; she then slipped into her anthem “Bitch Betta Have My Money” with her cadre of goth dancers surrounding her.

Rihanna accepted the award, giving Drake a big hug and what looked to be a quick kiss before addressing the audience. The music video, which shows him looking frail in bed with bandaged eyes, was released just days before the icon’s January 10 death. The girl group also won song of the summer for “All In My Head (Flex)”.
