The National Park Service is celebrating a huge milestone today

She encouraged the audience to share their favorite national park memories.
“That was the first time we as a nation made a decision to set aside a piece of land and say we were not going to allow it to be developed and preserve it in perpetuity for future generations”, said Julena Campbell, Public Information Officer for the New River Gorge National River in West Virginia.
As the National Park Service expands its reach on the Schoodic Peninsula, the ripple effects are causing alarm in the intertidal zone around Acadia National Park.
Secretary Jewel says it’s important for the parks to be inclusive to everyone in the coming years.
“The National Park Service became responsible for writing the management plan to protect the river and then kind of like deputizing the local people to implement that plan”, said Akers.

He commented, “We’re facing a $12 billion backlog”. Today, there are 500 units of national battlefields, historic sites, wild and scenic rivers and wildlife refuges, including 59 national parks covering a total of 85 million acres. Next month two German friends will visit and I’ll introduce them to three National Parks.
