Aside from all of his wins throughout the Rio Olympics this year, US swimmer Michael Phelps also made headlines earlier this month for his now-iconic “Phelps face”.

Michael Phelps, who won five gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this month, revealed at the MTV Video Music Awards that he was listening to Future’s “Stick Talk” when he frowned at an opponent in a widely circulated meme. “Remember in Rio when I made that face that was all over the internet?”
Future may not have won any VMAs for his work over the past year, but he did get to perform and learn that he inspired one of the year’s most popular memes, so that’s gotta count for something.
Phelps’ death stare, aimed at longtime rival South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, went viral when he was just about to compete in the men’s 200-meter butterfly finals. MTV chose to invite Future to perform, whether it was in response to what West said, or for perhaps some other reason, like because Phelps really enjoyed his music.
Atlanta rapper Future and Olympics gold medal victor Michael Phelps could have a serious collaboration coming in the near future. Some people, however, criticized his performance, when it was posted on YouTube, with Jaret Lynch, for example, writing “Future sounds just bad without autotune”. The audience seemed to enjoy the performance, judging from their applause and cheers.

Phelps said that it was Future’s song “Stick Talk” that helped power him to a grand total 23 gold.
