Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo breaks bone in back

The Cowboys are losing Tony Romo but it could be good for the franchise so they can develop the young Dak Prescott to a starting role at the quarterback position next season and the future.

“We’ve gotten a lot of different timetables for when he can return”, Garrett said Sunday, a day after he announce an MRI had revealed a broken bone in Romo’s back.

“We’re going to monitor his condition day by day and we’ll see how he feels going forward”, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said.

As I reported during their preseason game against Seattle, there was a moment in the game where Tony Romo was clutching his back and was pulled out of the match.

It’s the latest in a long line of injuries for Tony, who missed 12 games in 2015 after breaking his collarbone twice.

With Romo out, the Cowboys now turn to rookie Dak Prescott, who has been impressive in the preseason.

“Come Week 1, we’ll be focusing on Dallas”, he said.

Prescott has been superb in the Cowboys’ three preseason games, completing 39 of 50 passes for 454 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions and two rushing touchdowns.

This isn’t the first time Romo has had to battle a back injury. “We’ve heard a wide range of possibilities in terms of when he would be able to play”.

There isn’t a timetable for Romo’s recovery as it stands right now, but it seems like a reasonable guess that he won’t available for at least the first few games of the season. A source said Romo will miss 6-10 weeks to heal.

Moore also noted the Cowboys will look for a veteran to back up Prescott, as their only other options on the roster are Kellen Moore and Jameill Showers. If so than Romo may realize he is just not healthy enough to play anymore, and hands the team to Dak.

Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said earlier this week that every player has a price tag when talking about how much it would take to accept a trade for Josh Gordon. “Everybody focus on doing their job, and I think our team understands that”. You don’t like to see any player get hurt, any other quarterback, a guy I have great respect for and have competed against a bunch.

Garrett broke the news to the team after practice Saturday morning. However, throughout training camp and in the preseason, Claiborne has gotten his hands on more balls and wants to take the next step in what has been a disappointing career to date.
