Police charged two brothers who have deep ties to a gang with the shooting death of the cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, officials said Sunday.

Even before the high-profile shooting death of Nykea Aldridge, NBA star Dwayne Wade’s cousin, Chicago had been battling a citywide spike in violent crime. In May, more than four dozen people, many of them in Atlanta, were indicted for gang-related criminal activity-including a police officer who’d served in the armed forces.

“Chicago has recovered a gun for every hour of 2016”, Johnson said, adding that almost 6,000 illegal guns have been recovered by authorities so far this year. She was near the school because she planned to register some of her four children, police said. Derren Sorells was sentenced to six years for aggravated robbery and escape in 2012, but was released on parole on August 12.

Aldridge was killed Friday afternoon when she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting while pushing her infant child in a stroller near Dulles School of Excellence on the city’s south side, police said.

At the same time, an unidentified driver was dropping someone off at the nearby Parkway Gardens apartments when the Sorells brothers began to chase and shoot at him, police said. She was pronounced dead 45 minutes later in the hospital. So far this month, 70 people have been killed by gun violence in Chicago with 435 gun-related homicides this year. “Because the community helped us with it”, Johnson said.

“We’re still going to help empower people like the one who senselessly shot my niece in the head”, Jolinda Wade told reporters as she held her sister in her arms, in remarks posted online by WGN-TV.

This is not the first time one of Wade’s relatives has been a victim in a shooting. “Unreal”, he tweeted on Friday. #EnoughIsEnough.” He also pleaded for peace in the city of Chicago, which has seen over 2,700 shootings since the beginning of the year, with this being “another act of senseless gun violence” where “4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON.

Johnson also said that Chicago residents should be frustrated and hopes that the arrests bring some sort of closure for the Aldridge and Wade families. “It’s noteworthy because these two offenders are the prime examples of. repeat gun offenders who don’t care who they shoot”. “We ought to be extending our sympathy to the family – that’s the only reaction that is appropriate right now, and maybe a sadness about this gun violence issue, which we know is complicated”, Kaine said.
