“We believe all the answers are within that house”, he said.
“All the circumstances will be explored, that is the position”.
Gardaí were called to a house in the townland of Barconey outside Ballyjamesduff at around midday where the bodies of a couple and their three children were discovered.
It is understood the man and his wife were teachers at schools in the area.
According to the assistant commissioner, there is no evidence that a gun was used.
“If there is five people dead, it’s tragic, no matter what”.
It is understood that a relative of the family called to the home at shortly this morning, and that when they were unable to gain entry they raised the alarm.
The area has been sealed off and the office of the State Pathologist has been notified.
Police say the family had been seen in the local community yesterday and police had “no reason to suspect anything was untoward” prior to the incident.
