“Report of shooting at LAX proven to be loud noises only”, LAPD Capt. Andy Neiman said on Twitter.

Dudek said she did not hear shots, but chose to leave Terminal 7.

The LA Airport Police Department tweeted: “Police searching LAX after reports [of shooting]”.

At roughly the same time the panic commenced, police detained a man in a Zorro costume.

An internet giveaway to the United Nations.

In all, 281 flights were delayed, including arrivals and departures, and two were canceled, according to airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles.

An Irvine native who arrived at Los Angeles International Airport with more than 1,000 dried insects in his luggage – including 150 endangered butterflies – could be sentenced to prison Monday.

Speaking to ABC News, the man dressed as Zorro, who remained unnamed, said: “They turned me over, put handcuffs on me and then told me what was going on [.] they searched me”.

The false alarm came as police investigate whether a raucous celebration August 14 at JFK Airport led to noises people believed were shots.

The news of possible gunshots prompted some people to self-evacuate by rushing to escape the wrong way through security doors, setting off alarms that added to the sense of danger, LAX police union head Marshall McClain said on KNX 1070 Newsradio.

The alert at LAX comes two months after police temporarily evacuated a terminal at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport while they investigated reports of gunfire in one of its terminals.

However, there had been nearly a lockdown at the airport with visible panic all around, said sources.

Video shot by Twitter user Sam Macon showed Airport Police officers approaching the costumed man with weapons drawn.
