“We do not want to make an announcement. that is not enforceable, that doesn’t have details worked out, that winds up in the place that the last two announcements have wound up”, Kerry said.

While Russia and the U.S. have “narrow issues to resolve”, Kerry said the only way to end the conflict, which has raged on for more than five years and led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, was through political agreement.

27 de agosto de 2016, 17:27Moscow, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry outlined today an agreement in Geneva to coordinate actions in Syria, diplomatic sources said today.

“We are close”, Kerry said.

Kerry said the talks with Lavrov had “achieved clarity on the path forward” but together they offered few details on how they planned to renew a February cessation of hostilities and improve humanitarian assistance.

They discussed ways to agree on military cooperation and information sharing in a bid to defeat Islamic State militants in Syria – something both sides want.

The future of Russian-back Syrian president Bashar al-Assad was not part of the talks, discussions were focused on a political transition. Last week, the USA had to call for Russian help when Syrian warplanes struck an area not far from where US troops were operating. “Russian Federation will work with the Syrian government, the United States will work with the opposition”, announced Lavrov.

Those goals are not new, but recent developments have made achieving them even more urgent and important, according to USA officials.

Referring to Daraya, Lavrov said: “This is an example I think will get some following”. There should be “no (military) escalation in areas adjacent or around the area of the pause”.
