Gabriel, whose legal name was Alberto Aguilera Valadez, died of natural causes, Los Angeles County Coroner spokeswoman Selena Barros said. Juan Gabriel’s publicist told The Associated Press that he died at 11:30.

(CNN) – The death of Latin American music legend Juan Gabriel is heartbreaking news for throngs of fans who’ve followed his music career for decades.

In a statement, John Fogerty wrote, “My heart is heavy and very sad today for Juan Gabriel has passed away”.

“A voice and a talent that represented Mexico”, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Twitter.

He traveled to Mexico City as a teenager and slept on the streets and in train stations while trying to break into the music business. His mother was not able to take care of him so he was sent to an orphanage in Juarez.

Juan Gabriel is survived by his four sons and grandchildren.

By one count Juan Gabriel put out some 2,000 songs and he was known for marathon live shows.
