More than 1,000 children and adults used brown, green and white umbrellas to create a living version of the Park Service emblem on the National Mall, which the agency photographed from a helicopter above. There now is no fee.
“So the National Park Service in its next century must welcome all visitors, all Americans and foreign visitors as well to these incredible public lands”.
The government body oversees 411 national parks, recreation areas, and various moments, and as the Chronicle reminds us was officially created by President Woodrow Wilson on August 25, 1916.
So if you can’t quite get away from your desk to celebrate the National Park Service this weekend, you can at least bring a bit of the parks to you.
At Gardiner, Park Service Director Jon Jarvis opened his remarks by saying he had 413 choices of a place to be on the Centennial Day but he only wanted to be in Yellowstone, America’s first national park. Visitors are invited to share National Park photos on social media using the hashtag #NPS100.
For those of us who’ve ever enjoyed our majestic national parks, like standing on the valley floor of Yosemite National Park to gaze up at the natural beauty of the granite cathedral of El Capitan and Half Dome, it’s a welcome breath of fresh air to our daily lives in the concrete jungle. Visitors heading to Thursday’s celebration and concert with Emmylou Harris and John Prine at the Roosevelt Arch from the south face an hour-long detour into Idaho.

As the National Park Service celebrates their Centennial Thursday the country’s top steward spent her morning in Glacier National Park to look at the successes and challenges the Crown Jewel of the Continent is facing. Jewell also plans to talk with park officials, scientists and others about how climate change is affecting the park and its disappearing glaciers.
