Florida’s Callaway cleared to play in opener vs UMass

Callaway was suspended indefinitely in January but rejoined the team shortly before being cleared in a Title IX investigation regarding a sexual assault allegation against him. McElwain said Callaway “should be good to go” at his Monday press conference. Tabor and tight end C’yontai Lewis were suspended from team activities after a fight at practice on August 16. The duo is suspended for the first game while waiting for the state to decide on charges following a BB gun incident that had the players arrested on a pair of felonies.

“We’ve had some guys that obviously made some choices not to play in this game”, McElwain said, per SEC Country.

McElwain said he expected to be challenged by UMass blitzes; he said the Minutemen will bring multiple guys from multiple locations.

Johnson released a statement in early June in which he stated that a modified suspension would permit his client to attend classes on campus as well as allow him to use the football team’s practice facilities. Callaway is Florida’s leading returning receiver and doubles as a unsafe return man.

“We’re fired up to have Antonio in the lineup”, quarterback Luke Del Rio said. “He’s done a tremendous job in practice”. He’s been consistent every day and worked really hard to get in shape and when he came back we embraced him with open arms and he’s done a great job getting back into the groove. “It will be fun”.

Sophomore wideout Antonio Callaway has been fully reinstated to the team and will play Saturday.

Callaway had 35 catches for 678 yards and four touchdowns as a freshman last season and returned two punts for touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns, one against LSU on October 17 and one against Alabama in the SEC title game. “It’s just great to have all of our weapons back on the field”. The former Gainesville High standout, who started two games last season, has only nine career receptions.
